What's My Mission Statement?

Inspired this week by a post @analiesemarie's Tulips and Tea and Kimberly Wilson's podcast #167 interview with writer/artist Laura Zam, I have been thinking quite a bit about goal setting.

Isn't it fitting that we're in the midst of the holiday season and nearing the end of 2009?

As I reflect on the blessings and frustrations of the last year, the fun experiences and painful moments, one thing I keep coming back to is that I want to exert more control in my life. I want 2010 to be a year where I MAKE fun experiences and INVITE blessings rather than just hope I'm in the right place at the right time. I want to be better prepared to take advantage of opportunities, and engage more fully with people who encourage rather than those who don't.

David Allen, of Getting Things Done recently tweeted "The coolest things I do usually aren't on my lists, but because of them." I've noticed that without a clear direction for my career or even my every day, I tend to spin my wheels doing a lot of things that Steven Covey would definitely consider in the Not Urgent Or Important quadrant.

Lindsay - of Shrimp Salad Circus - was honored today by Prom Mafia as a Bombshell Blogger because
"...She’s clearly a fashion and business trendsetter and her blog is a must add to your blog reader!" I love the site, and have noticed that while Shrimp covers a wide variety of topics, it is always true to its mission, seen here on the right side of the page.

A mission statement is usually reserved for nonprofit organizations and community associations, designed to pinpoint what the group intends to accomplish. In recent years bloggers have adopted this practice as well. If nothing else, it is practical - it tells your readers what exactly they can expect from your blog and keeps you from veering of path and out of your area of expertise.

So I find myself asking: what's my mission statement? I certainly write about my journey in life, but to where? What am I trying to accomplish?

With some tongue-in-cheek, I clearly intend to be Happy, Healthy, Well-Adjusted and Popular, right? Well...Right! This month, for my December Intentions, I'm committing to figuring out what that means, whether it needs to change, and how I can direct my life to reflect my mission.

Hopefully, by sincerely documenting my journey, I can inspire others out there to do the same, and find peace in their little corner of the world.

Megan! I was just thinking about this last night. In fact, I got out a notepad and started to jot things down ... and then got distracted by the TV show House. Clearly, TV is ruining my long term happiness ;)

Good luck in figuring out your mission and thanks for the inspiration to pick that notepad up again tonight (and to set down the remote!).

I like the cactus with lights photo! And I like this quote: "A discovery is said to be an accident meeting a prepared mind". The idea of controlling yourself more or making things happen sounds too restrictive to me because no one can really control anything - but rather that just by putting yourself in the frame of mind to have things happen (which you are), that fortuitous coincidences will pop up here and there. You didn't exactly say what your mission statement is? By documenting your journey, and sharing your ideas you inspire me all the time!

What a fantastic post! Thank you so much for the include, and it's funny, but I had never quite thought of it as a mission statement before. That's exactly what it is though!!! So glad to have found your lovely blog!
